  • Anybody got time to help with a search please?

    If you can tear yourselves away from 1911, lol...

    Can anybody find any evidence (not in 1911) for the existence of Arthur Race born about 1856 in Rotherhithe, Surrey / London, and / or his wife Marion born about 1861 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, please? They are supposed to have got married about 1883 and to have had no children, and could possibly be in Brighton, Sussex.

    I've found a possible for Arthur on the 1871 census age 15, a Distiller living in St George the Martyr Southwark with father Daniel, a cheesemonger age 46 from Bedfordshire. Daniel's wife on that one is Elizabeth but as she claims to be 31, probably not Arthur's mother. Other children William 19, Julia 17, Walter 5 all born London and Rudolph born Ealing(?). Arthur's birthplace on there is just London though, so I don't know if he is the Rotherhithe one or not. Can't see the family in 1861 but of course they could be in one of the missing pieces. Not managed to find any likely Arthur in 1881, 1891, or 1901! Nor the marriage to Marion. (Marion is sometimes used as a variation of Mary Ann). Can anybody help, please? I seem to be going round in circles with these people!

    Hi Kite

    The IGI is showing a birth entry for Arthur Race to Daniel and Louisa Race in 1855, but not baptised until 1866. Could this be your Arthur ? Also a 1862 marriage in freebmd Daniel Race to Elizabeth Andrews at St Martin in the Fields. and one for 1846 at Poplar to Louisa Surridge. Walter Percival Race baptised at the same time as Arhtur, but parents Daniel and Elizabeth.

    This seems to fit together with your information. Arthur could have still be born in Rotherhithe, but not baptised until his fathers second marriage. That will make it harder to find Julia and William, but I am off to look at the 1881 Cd version

    This is Walter/Daniel/Elziabeth/Julia/Rudolph in 1881 - no Arthur with them though

    Dwelling: 9 Cazenove Rd
    Census Place: Hackney, London, Middlesex, England
    PRO Ref RG11 Piece 0287 Folio 48 Page 1

    Daniel RACE 56 born Byzenwade, Bedford, England Occ: Cheesemonger Manager
    Elizabeth RACE 41 Bath City, Somerset, England Occ: Cheesemonger Manager
    Julia RACE 26 Paddington, Middlesex, England Rel:Daur
    Occ: Assistant
    Walter P. RACE 15 St Martins Lane, Middlesex, England Rel:Son
    Occ: Clerk
    Rodolph L. RACE 12 Ealing, Middlesex, England Rel:Son
    Occ: Scholar
    Octavus E. RACE 6 Islington, Middlesex, England Rel:Son

    Umm, in 1881 Arthur John Race is an inmate at the Hoxton House Ayslum with the handicap "Lunatic", so perhaps its not the one who married Marion, or maybe it is??

      Also in 1881 there is an Arthur Race born 1855 Fulham Middlesex a bricklayers labourer, married to Mellone born Kensington London children Ellen and Edward Race.
      Could this be a better option ? - oh no, you said married in 1883, so they would not be together in 1881 ??

      I don't have an ancestry sub, but there are a couple of Arthur ROSE listed for Middlesex in 1861. Perhaps you need to look at the 1881 image to see if Mellone could be Marion and go from there ?

        Thanks for all that, Di. I'm sure the baptism you found must be the same Arthur as the one I found on the 1871, but as for whether it's the one who is supposed to be married to Marion, I'm not sure yet.

                Looking at David & Elizabeth's children a William David Race was born Marylebone Sep qtr 1851 1 226;
                Julia Race Marylebone Dec qtr 1853 1a 378;

                Arthur John Race Marylebone Mar 1856 1a 427.

                If the family were living in Southwark in 1871 it is possible that Arthur could have said that he was born in Rotherhithe which is part of Southwark. I haven't been able to find any likely births registered in Rotherhithe in that period.

                Hoxton House Asylum would have been close to the family in Hackney although I seem to remember (not from personal experience) that Hoxton had a near monopoly of private asylums for London.

                  Oh, thanks very much, Robert, that does look very likely to be them.
