Has anyone had success in finding a "register" of Master Mariners?

My friend has hit a large brick wall and asked ME for help (ha ha). She has his "number" but has been unable to find any records - A2A, National Archives etc.

The mariner in question came from Grimsby where his father had a fleet of fishing smacks, he was sent to Glasgow to serve his apprenticeship at the age of 14 years 6 months, and was "found" when his ship was recorded in Australia.

Any help will be most appreciated.

      Period, Peanuts?

There is masses of info at Kew and I've certainly tracked down master mariners there.

Thank you both - Kite Runner and Pheonix - I have passed your information on to Maureen (my friend) and she has started searching.

        Thank you once again
