  • Census challenge anyone? 1881

I've tried but to no avail.

I'm looking for these in 1881

I have James Carter (labourer) born Norwich in 1852.
Married Susanna Elizabeth Knott at Norwich in 1874.
Susanna was born at Dundalk Ireland c 1853.

They had a son born in Feb. 1882 named George and according to the birth cert James was deceased at time of registration March 1882.
If the birth cert is a true account of parentage then James should be somewhere on the '81 census.
Susanna later married Alfred Betts who died in'89.
I have Sussana (listed as Elizabeth) and son George on the '91 census and a daughter named Rose Carter is enumerated, born circa 1878 at Norwich.

So the 1881 census should have a household of
James Carter, Susanna or Elizabeth Carter and daughter Rose.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

Have you checked the actual birth address?

Yes I'm sure I have, the Carter family lived for many years at Magdalene Street, Elephant Yard. James Carter's father was still there in 1881 and I'm sure I found him on the LDS site and then went from household to household looking for James and his family. George Carter born Magdalen street 1882.
Ill go and find the ref numbers.

George was at Elephant Yard living next door to his grandfatger in '91

Have you tried looking for James's death / burial? I know there could be a lot of possibles.

There are two possibles one in Winchester in JAS 1881 aged 29 and one at Prestwich JFM 1882 aged 29. I have found a James Carter living at Winchester in 1881 but I'm sure he is not mine.

If you put Norwich in the Civil Parish box the first 700 records are blank. Maybe this family are in those :(

Have you found Alfred Betts on the 1881 to make sure they aren't with him?
