  • Another transciption laugh!!

Just searching on the 1901 census (you all know where!!;)) when I came across this entry.....

    George Gibbs, RG13; Piece: 266; Folio: 66; Page: 10.

In the relationship column the enumerator has written a lot..it has been transcribed as this.....
There Kersone Are Romeless & Found In The Cocalily Of King Wm Gorce City !!!!

Had to check it out and it actually says.....
These persons are homeless and found in the locality of King Wm Street, City.

    PMSL!!! :D :D :D

Cocalily is a nice smutty-sounding word isn't it!

I'm Romeless as well as I imagine lots of us are.

As mentioned elsewhere, a Scottish man in 1871 was a "Coliecta Cale 28 Kaily Boy" according to Ancestry. I don't feel like shelling out for SP to find what he really did.

Not a mistranscripion, but I was looking through a film of bishops transcripts yesterday, and came across a chap named 'Richard Pritchard'. His parents must have been a right pair of pilchards, to name him Richard!

            Bee.
            Bee~~~fuddled.

            Searching for BANKS, MILLER, MOULTON from Lancs and Cheshire; COX from Staffordshire and Birmingham;
COX, HALL, LAMBDEN, WYNN, from Hants and Berks; SYMES (my mystery g'father!) from anywhere near Bournemouth.

I know a bloke called Richard Upritchard, and he pronounces it as Richard UP-Richard

I knew a couple named Uprichard. They pronounced it You-Pritchard, which I believe is the Scottish pronunciation.

Carol Smillie could just as easily have spelt her name Smellie, which is also pronounced Smiley.

Sounds like the Welsh 'Ap-Richard' - son of Richard.

                    I was thinking that.

Of course, that highlights the fact that Richard Pritchard would be much the same as Johnnie Johnson - which people don't tend to disparage.

But Johnnie Johnson was a name like Chalky White, not so far as I know his real name.

I know what you mean because my uncle (Robert) and grandfather (Herbert) both got called Chris, I believe, on account of their surname.

It may well be true of The Johnnie Johnson, but I think there are others with real names such as John Johnson, Richard Richardson, William Williamson, Henry Harrison, Stephen Stevenson, David Davidson... whose names would not be considered particularly odd. This is even more true of William Williams, John Johns, Peter Peters... which I am led to believe are much the same sort of surname.

I think Richard Pritchard sounds odd to the English (as distinct from Welsh) ear because it's such a close rhyme - not even a final "s" to disrupt the effect. Do any of our Welsh members have the same reaction?
