From the Ancestry Army Service Record of William Hadrill (sadly a casualty in Mesopotamia in 1915). Image number 22465.

It's the name of the niece or nephew - second name down - which I can't make out.

    For letter comparison -

    Mrs W Bryant
    ????
    Lily Maud or Mabel
    Mr Fred Hadrill
    Helen Marsh
    Sister
    ....Folkestone

    Lily's surname could be MARSH
Her name could be Mabel,Maud or even Muriel?
    Is she 18 in 1919 ?

I think the nephew is MARSH too, ..possibly Herbert?

Helen seems to live at Caple, ... the local name for Capel-le-Ferne just east of Folkestone, Kent, where the vicar signed the form.

Thanks Gwyn - I had never heard of Capel le Ferne.

Yes, I read it as 18 years for Lily.

Helen Marsh was born Helen Hadrill and Mrs W Bryant Alice Hadrill. But I can't see any suitable Marsh or Bryant births to fit the illegible niece/nephew. and I can't see a Lily Marsh birth in the right area.

There isn't a Helen/Ellen Hadrill marriage to a Marsh so Lily may have been registered under another name.

        Could that be Hester Marsh?

As soon as I glanced at it I saw Lily MURIEL. What year are you looking for her birth Gillian?

Thanks Trish. Possibly, but I've been thinking the letter in the middle looks more like an r rather than an s.

I think I'm getting more confused!

I think Helen Marsh must have been William Hadrill's half sister. William's parents, James Hadrill and Julia Wisker married in 1888. Helen (Hadrill) was born 1882 Paddington. I've just found a marriage in 1905 for Helen Wisker to Ernest William Marsh in Dover, which would fit in with Folkestone later.

I can't find any of them in 1901 although Julia's death may be the Julia Hadrill MarQ 1901 Croydon.

Sorry Chrissie - I missed your post when replying to Trish. the site is playing up for me today and my replies are showing as still loading, although, if I go to the forum on a new tab, they are showing as loaded.

It looks as if Lily is 18 in 1919 so around 1901, but I've no idea where her mother would have been living then or what the original surname would have been - Hadrill, Wisker or Marsh. Likewise with the other illegible niece/nephew who could be the son/daughter of Helen or her sister Alice.

              Fingers crossed this reply loads!

I have just been looking to see if anything jumps out re Lily. I looked for all the Lily Muriel births from 1900 - 1902 and then crossed checked for any marriages between the surnames that came up and Marsh.

Non made much sense with the different area though. The nearest being her birth in Tunbridge and a marriage in Bethnal Green. A birth in Basford (Notts) and a marriage in Sheffield. A birth in Middlesex and a marriage in Kent.
Unless Harriet Lillia Marsh - Gertrude Emily Marsh - Martha Marsh or Louisa Jane Marsh mean anything to you?

Chrissie - thanks for doing all that searching for me!

I have found William George Bryant, the husband of the other sister, Alice, on Ancestry's service records and there were five children listed for that couple so I've no idea why Helen didn't include those in the list of nieces and nephews on the form .

I think the illegible name must be Herbert as there is a birth for a Herbert W Marsh, mmn Wisker, Dover 1911.

I don't know what to make of Lily - the other Marsh names don't mean anything to me at the moment. I think I'll have to go back to Ancestry 1901 and try again to find Helen, in case she was living under another name. It doesn't look as if there are any service records for her husband Ernest William Marsh unfortunately!

                  Thanks for all the help.
