  • Death in Scotland c.1968

I have little knowledge of Scottish records so would value some help please.

Would a death certificate for a woman show whether or not she had been divorced?
I know the name at death, - her married name, but she and her husband parted, ....maybe divorced?

According to Scotland's People, the death certificate should give "marital status", so I would think that would include divorced.

If the divorce took place in Scotland, then it might be listed on the National Archives Scotland catalogue - I'm not sure what date the divorces on there go up to though.

I can't find info on the site that says what date the divorce records go up to, so I just searched for a surname in my tree and found some divorces listed from the 1970's, so if they divorced in Scotland before 1968 I would think it should be on there.

        Many thanks for that information.
I've just looked for a divorce, but can't see one..... I'll have to delve deeper.

Don't know, but I would have thought this sort of record would be at Register House in Edinburgh (the Scottish GRO) rather than NAS.

The divorces are definitely listed on the NAS site, Uncle John - just have a quick search and you will see them!

That is a very kind offer, Thank you.
I will send you a direct private message.

I am clutching straws re. the divorce mention.
Her husband disappeared off the family radar in 1930s and we recently found him arriving by ship in Southampton in 1959 with a new wife and young son.
Our problem is that we don't know if he married her in Scotland, England, South Africa ( where they had lived)... or were in fact not married.
IF he was divorced it may have been in Scotland, England or South Africa.

                  I stand corrected.

In Scotland - I actually found the mention of the divorce on a subsequent wedding certificate of the ex- husband with the date it took place too. (and I think it had first wife's name too) will have to look

I too have seen a named previous spouse on a later marriage certificate, ( England )
I rather suspect that the 2nd 'wife' in the situation I'm researching was unaware of the previous family.
The husband had children with his first wife in Scotland, - the youngest in 1923, then later lived in South Africa before arriving in England with a son born in 1949. The 2nd wife was born in Kent, but so far I've been unlucky in tracing a marriage, .... if indeed there was one.....

My father was divorced in 1984 and his divorce comes up when searched for on the NAS search facility

                          Hi Gwyn,
I had a look for you. The death certificate only says widow. I've got the details of the certificate which I can PM for you.

Thank you for taking the time to check that for me.
She was indeed a widow, in that William died before her.....but did she know that herself I wonder.?

I look forward to hearing from you.
