  • Find My Past Blog - Was it back to school time for your ancestors?

If your ancestors were teachers, they’d be gearing up for the new school year around now.
With that in mind, we wanted to share with you a lovely record from our Teacher’s Registration Council Registers.
We discovered film director Guy Ritchie’s paternal great-grandfather Vivian Guy Ouseley McLaughlin. Click on the image to see a larger version:

The record is a goldmine of useful information about Vivian. It reveals the following about his career:
    • Date he registered with the Teachers Registration Council: 1 September 1915
    • Occupation: principal
    • Place of employment: Brightlands School, Newnham-on-Severn, Gloucestershire
    • Teaching experience: before teaching at Brightlands School, Vivian worked as an assistant master at Cordwalles School (spelt incorrectly here as Coodwalles School) in Maidenhead, 1893-1902

Are there teachers in your family tree?
Discovering your ancestor’s teaching record gives you a unique glimpse into their working life. The records hold details of nearly 100,000 people who taught in England and Wales 1870-1948.
More than half of these are women, making them an especially useful place to find out more about your female ancestors’ careers. How many teachers will you find today?
