  • Am I related to Don Cockell?

When my mum met my dad in 1956, he told her that he was related to the Boxer Don Cockell, but as far as I know he never told her how they were related, all I have to go on is that dad was born in Battersea and there are Blacksmiths in his ancestral line. Don Cockell was a Blacksmith.

Dads parents Frederick Charles Potter and Lily Howell married in 1919 and lived at 10 Latchmere Street, where my dad was born.
Frederick dad George Potter born in 1861 was a Blacksmith Hammerman.

There ia also a David Potter born in 1834 also a Blacksmith and George Potter born in 1810 occupation was Smith in 1851 census.

Im new to this site and tried to post on another page on this site that mentioned Don Cockell which mentioned an Alfred Potter on it but didn't manage to, hoping that someone sees this post that can help me.

      Debra,
Don Cockell was my Father. I don't know my Grandmother's name. I believe that my Father's Father was John Cockell, who was described as an Italian Ice Cream salesman. I don't know whether or not he was Italian and I don't know whether or not they were married. When I knew my Grandmother her husband was Alf Potter. They had two Kids - Kenneth and Beryl Potter. I am guessing they were born around 1940. In the 1950s they lived in Bishopsford Road, Carshalton, Surrey.

      Good Luck,

      Patrick Cockell

        Hello

Ken Potter is my father. His mother was Mary Ann Cockell who was known as Kate by her family and Alf Potter was his father. One of Kate's brothers was also a Cockell - the three others had the name Bolster, which was the name of their father and Kate's stepfather. My father was born in 1940 and his father (Alf Potter) was the 21st child out of 21 - so perhaps Paula is related to one of those Potters - if that is the case she wouldnt be a blood relative of Don Cockell, as Alf Potter was his stepfather. Dad thinks Latchmere rings a bell - he believes there was a Latchmere pub and also a Latchmere estate. Sadly Beryl passed away a couple of years ago. I hope this info is of interest to somebody.
