  • Using tables in Blogs

The use of table format is a convenient way of publishing dated or sequential information into a blog.

The tables below can be copied and pasted into a member's blog and be used for such things as
    • transcription of journals/diaries,
    • timeline of events either from your research as a whole or a timeline relating to a particular individual, surname line or event.
    • recording the military records of an ancestor, e.g. enlistment, postings, promotions

    - or other similar records in your possession.

    EXAMPLES OF USAGE:

Transcription of diary entries - written by Mollie Crawford (my grandmother)

    DATE DIARY TRANSCRIPTION
1st January 1891 type text here
10th January 1891 type text here
row height will expand as you enter text
rows can easily be inserted or deleted

Timeline of events in my Family History

    DATE NAME EVENT
    1st January 1845 James Wareham Entry in the Criminal Registers (source Ancestry) show that James ... .. ........ ..... ..... .... ... .......... ..................................... ............. ...................... ............... ....... ................ .............. ....................... ............. ...................... ............... ....... ................ ..................................... ............. .... (text will wrap in the row)
10th January 1865 George Wareham George, his wife Mollie, and three children Mary, John and James, emigrated to Australia. Shown on the passenger lists travelling on SS Cumberland, sailing from Southampton on 10 January, arriving Australia ..................... ................. etc

    IMPORTANT:
Before including tables in your blogs you will need to check your settings to ensure you have the Enhanced Interface selected.
To do this click on SETTINGS (top right of page) -> GENERAL SETTINGS (left hand side of page).
Under the section entitled MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONS, select ENHANCED INTERFACE (Full WYSIWYG Editing).
Scroll down the page and click on SAVE CHANGES

When copying the tables it is very easy to miss highlighting the top left and bottom right corners of the table, which may result in some of the coding not being included. We would therefore suggest you copy from the words "highlight from here" to the words "to here". Once pasted into your blog you can remove the unwanted words.

    Two column table

    highlight from here

    Heading 1 Heading 2
    to here

    Three column table

    Heading 1 Heading 2 Heading 3

    Four column table

    highlight from here

    Heading 3
    Heading 4
    to here

The row height of the table will expand as the text is entered, text will wrap in each cell of table. Rows can be added or deleted by using the icons shown below

For those that prefer not to work with tables, then by simply using the "indent" option on the advanced editor toolbox, the following effect can be achieved.

    1st January 1845
    James Wareham
    Entry in the Criminal Registers (source Ancestry) show that James ... .. ........ ..... ..... .... ... .......... ..................................... .. ............. ...................... ............... ....... ................ ................................... .... (text will wrap in the row)

    10th January 1865
    George Wareham
George, his wife Mollie, and three children Mary, John and James, emmigrated to Australia. Shown on the passenger lists (source Ancestry) travelling on SS Cumberland, sailing from Southampton on 10 January, arriving Australia ..................... ................. etc.

    IMPORTANT:
The maximum number of characters which is allowed in a blog is 10,000. This will equate to approximately 60 rows rows of full text.
