    TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Abstracts from Norfolk City Marriage Bonds, 1797 - 1850
DESCRIPTION : Abstracts from Norfolk City Marriage Bonds [1797-1850]. George Holbert Tucker. (1934). Compiled originally in 1934, Mr. Tucker's transcription of marriage bonds for the city of Norfolk, Virginia is the most complete collection of these records we know of and one of the most painstakingly assembled. The core of the volume consists of 3,600 marriage bonds, arranged in chronological order, as found in the Norfolk Borough Court House. Typically, the bonds give the full names of the bride and groom and their securities (sometimes family members). All persons named in the bonds are indexed at the back of the book. Mr. Tucker went to the extra length of establishing the correct spellings of all surnames and the betrotheds' actual fact of marriage by consulting the ministers' returns corresponding to the period of the bonds that are on file in the Norfolk Corporation Court. In perhaps a third of the entries, the bonds are annotated with notes from the returns disclosin!
g, for example, the name of the bride's father--who often was the security-- the name of the officiating minister, the church where the ceremony was performed, and so on. It was during his examination of the ministers' returns that the author discovered the early Norfolk City burial lists and baptismal lists of the Rev. Robert S. Symes of Christ Protestant Episcopal Church, 1809-1816. These two lists, naming 500 parents and children with the date of baptism, and 300 decedents with their dates of death, respectively, are also included in the body of the work.

    TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - American Marriage Records Before 1699
DESCRIPTION : American Marriage Records Before 1699. William Montgomery Clemens. (1926). This interesting compilation contains the marriage records of many of the early colonists of New England, Long Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Its 12,000 recorded marriages constitute a directory of the earliest residents in America. Names are arranged alphabetically in block letters from A to Z with original spelling variants, and information supplied with each entry includes the exact date and place of marriage. This book is an outgrowth of twenty years of research in church records and in national, state, and town archives, and is the brainchild of the compiler of the celebrated North and South Carolina Marriage Records.

TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Bishops' Transcripts and Marriage Licenses, Bonds and Allegations, A Guide to Their Location and Indexes
DESCRIPTION : Bishops' Transcripts and Marriage Licenses, Bonds and Allegations, A Guide to Their Location and Indexes: Fourth Edition. Jeremy Gibson . Also included are abstracts, calendars, and indexes to marriage licenses, published or not, and when these are lacking there is an indication of the arrangement of the surviving documents. English marriage records were maintained in a wide variety of ecclesiastical courts. Anyone searching for marriage records prior to 1837, when civil registration was introduced, will find this simplified guide to be of inestimable value. This new edition includes maps of ecclesiastical jurisdictions.

TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Early Massachusetts Marriages Prior to 1800
DESCRIPTION : Early Massachusetts Marriages Prior to 1800. Frederic W. Bailey. (1897-1914). This is the most complete collection of early Massachusetts marriages ever published, containing over 20,000 entries for the period 1643-1800. The marriages derive from records kept by the various county, city, and court clerks in compliance with Massachusetts law, and give the full name of the bride and groom and date and place of marriage. The book is divided into four sections covering: Worcester County; Plymouth County; Middlesex, Hampshire, Berkshire, and Bristol counties; and Plymouth County again, as transcribed from the first volume of the records of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas and an unnumbered volume of the records of the Court of General Sessions. This last section contains over 1,000 additional entries. Each section of the book is separately paginated and indexed, except for the last, which is arranged in chronological order.

    TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Frederick County, Virginia, Marriages 1771 - 1825

Frederick County, with Augusta County, at one time embraced all of West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The 4,000 marriage records compiled in this volume (mostly bonds and ministers' returns) should be of particular interest to researchers whose forebears crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains.

    TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Lancaster County, Virginia, Marriage Bonds, 1652 - 1850
DESCRIPTION : Lancaster County, Virginia, Marriage Bonds, 1652-1850. Ida J. Lee. (1965). A wealth of genealogical information is contained in this modest volume. Altogether about 4,000 prospective brides and grooms are listed with dates and, sometimes, names of parents. For the convenience of the researcher the marriages are recorded in one alphabetical sequence by the surname of the groom. Additional important genealogical information such as the statement of widowhood and the place of residence is supplied if the information appeared in the original marriage bond. Lancaster County was formed from the parent counties of Northumberland and York in 1651. It was itself the parent of old Rappahannock County (formed in 1656) and Middlesex County (formed in 1673). Clearly, then, this work documents marriages from an important area and one larger than might at first be supposed.

DESCRIPTION : Marriages of Goochland County, Virginia, 1733-1815. Kathleen Booth Williams. (1960). Goochland County, Virginia was carved out of Henrico County in 1728 and was the parent, direct or indirect, of nine other Virginia counties. The Goochland County marriage register upon which this work is based was originally compiled by the staff of the Virginia State Library and subsequently transcribed by Mrs. Williams. In all, it refers to some 3,000 brides and grooms and to another 2,000 associated persons (parents, sureties, and witnesses) mentioned in the register.

TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Marriages of Mecklenburg County [Virginia] from 1765 to 1810
DESCRIPTION : Marriages of Mecklenburg County [Virginia] from 1765 to 1810. Stratton Nottingham. (1928). Mecklenburg County in south-central Virginia was formed from Lunenburg County in 1764 and today adjoins the North Carolina border opposite the counties of Granville, Vance, and Warren. This volume contains the only official record of extant marriages from Mecklenburg County. It was compiled from loose papers, inasmuch as no marriage register prior to 1850 is known to exist. The work consists of some 2,000 marriages in all and is arranged alphabetically according to the name of the groom. Each entry furnishes the names of the contracting parties, date of the bond, and name(s) of sureties. On occasion, the abstracts also indicate the bride and groom's address and/or the names of their parents. This work of vital importance to persons interested in Virginia genealogy concludes with a complete name index to the brides.

TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Second Supplement to Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700
DESCRIPTION : Second Supplement to Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Melinde Lutz Sanborn. (1995). While this second supplement draws extensively on periodical literature (from 1991 to January 1995), it has a much heavier emphasis on the unpublished work of some of the leading New England genealogists, studies of English marriages of colonial immigrants, and studies of immigrant clusters, most notably the Great Migration Study Project and the Mayflower Families Through Five Generations project. As was the case with the first supplement, this work contains corrections, new discoveries, significant new biographical detail, or deletions from the original Torrey canon. It is a substantially bigger book than the first supplement (50 percent longer) and has an index of more than 1,500 entries. Absolutely indispensable for New England research!
