DESCRIPTION : Abstracts of Wills and Other Records, Currituck and Dare Counties, North Carolina (1663-1850). Gordon C. Jones. (1958). This work contains abstracts of all known Currituck County wills of the period 1663-1850, showing residence, locations of property, names of wives, children, executors, and witnesses, and relevant dates of probate and examination. It also contains a list of names taken from deeds of the period 1676-1725; jurymen of 1723; tax lists of 1735, 1755, and 1779; militia lists of 1758; and heads of families from the census of 1790. TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Abstracts of Wills Recorded in Orange County, North Carolina, 1752 - 1800 and 1800 - 1850
DESCRIPTION : Abstracts of Wills Recorded in Orange County, North Carolina, 1752-1800 and 1800-1850. Ruth Herndon Shields. (1957, 1966). Orange County was formed in 1752 and for many years embraced a large section of central North Carolina, including part or all of the following present-day counties: Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Orange, Person, Randolph, Rockingham, and Wake. Abstracting the wills of Orange County to 1850 was the project of the Genealogical Records Committee of the Davie Poplar Chapter of the NSDAR. The abstracts were originally published in two separate volumes, but they are brought together now in a single volume for the convenience of the user. The abstracts, numbering many hundreds and referring to thousands of related individuals, all of whom are alphabetically indexed, generally include such information as the name of the testator, names of heirs and executors, references to property, and dates of probate. The book further contains rec!
ords of 280 marriages not shown in the Orange County marriage bonds. This is an unusually valuable publication for descendants of Orange County pioneers.

TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Indian Wills, 1911 - 1921, Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Book Seven
DESCRIPTION : Indian Wills, 1911-1921. Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Book Seven. Jeff Bowen . (2007) In accordance with federal statutes enacted in 1910 and 1913, the Law and, subsequently, the Probate Divisions of the Bureau of Indian Affairs were responsible for determining the heirs of deceased Indian trust allottees. Ultimately, Native Americans submitted more than 2,500 pages of wills and probate records to the Bureau. These records span the period 1911 to 1921 and, with a few exceptions, pertain to Indian families living in the Plains and several western states. This is the seventh book in the series of Indian Wills transcriptions by Mr. Bowen. As a rule, the documents identify the names of the testator, residence, heirs, a description of any real estate transferred in the will, names of executors and witnesses, and other particulars commonly found in probate records. Tribes predominating in Book Seven include the Cayuse, Chippewa, Coeur d?Alene, Coma!
nche, Crow, Flathead, Kaw, Nez Perce, Omaha, Sac & Fox, Uintah & Ouray, Umatilla, and Winnebago.

DESCRIPTION : Indian Wills, 1911-1921. Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs: Book Five. Jeff Bowen . (2007) Native Americans submitted more than 2,500 pages of wills and probate records to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. These records span the period 1911 to 1921 and, with a few exceptions, pertain to Indian families living in the Plains and several western states. Author Jeff Bowen, who has been transcribing these wills for publication, has here added a fifth volume to his series Indian Wills, 1911-1921. Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. As a rule, the records included identify the names of the testator, residence, heirs, a description of any real estate transferred in the will, names of executors and witnesses, and other particulars commonly found in probate records. The majority of the wills are of western origin, and the following tribes predominate in them: Apache, Chippewa, Comanche, Kiowa, Klamath, Omaha, Osage, and Winnebago. In all, genealogists will !
discover references to about 1,200 individuals in these pages, every one of whom is referenced in the complete name index at the back of the volume.

    TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Maryland. Index to the Wills of St. Mary's County, 1662 - 1960 and Somerset County, 1664 - 1955
DESCRIPTION : Maryland. Index to the Wills of St. Mary's County, 1662-1960 and Somerset County, 1664-1955. Joan Hume. (1970). All of the will records for the colonial period in Maryland were preserved in a central probate office in Annapolis by whatever name it was called. Following the American Revolution, these wills were sent to the Register of Wills of each Maryland county, to be recorded there and later returned to Annapolis. The central file of colonial wills was calendared, and an all-name index to them was prepared by James Magruder (and ultimately published by Genealogical Publishing Co.). The county sets of colonial wills have also been indexed by the local Register of Wills offices, and in a number of cases those indexes refer to people not found in Magruder's index because some papers were lost during the transfer of the wills. Of even greater importance, none of the wills for the post-colonial period in Maryland have been worked on at all, with the exception of !
those for St. Mary's County, which were printed in alphabetical order in the periodical Chronicles of St. Mary's. This work rectifies these shortcomings for the Maryland counties of St. Mary's and Somerset by providing a complete index to the wills recorded in those counties. The index to St. Mary's County wills, which is based on the one which appeared in the Chronicles of St. Mary's between 1961 and 1968, is arranged alphabetically by the name of the testator and gives the date and source of the original will. The Somerset index is arranged chronologically and thereunder alphabetically. Thus, all testators whose surnames begin with A and who died between 1664 and 1667 are grouped together, followed by those whose surnames begin with A and died between 1667 and 1750, and so on. Altogether, about 5,000 wills for St. Mary's County and 7,500 wills for Somerset County, many of them dated prior to 1800, are indexed.

DESCRIPTION : Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Abstracts of Early Wills, 1763-1790 (1749-1790). Brent H. Holcomb. (1980). The will abstracts in this volume, 1749-1790, are based on the oldest Mecklenburg County wills of record, as well as upon the extant returns of wills and estates of the North Carolina Secretary of State. While the length and contents of these abstracts vary, most of them provide the name of the testator, date of the will, names and relationships of all heirs to the estate (sometimes with ages given or inferred), contents of the estate, names of executors, and, usually, the date of probate.

The purpose of this guide is to show you where to start looking for wills and associated records, for before 1858 British wills were probated in a wide variety of ecclesiastical courts. This guide will lead to the correct record offices, both for places in the expected ecclesiastical jurisdictions and those that are the exceptions. The arrangement is by county and thereunder by court of jurisdiction and repository, with information indicating the present location of the wills, the period of coverage, and the existence of indexes. TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Virginia Will Records
DESCRIPTION : Virginia Will Records. . (1982). Virginia Will Records is composed of articles dealing with Virginia wills, inventories, and administration accounts and contains virtually everything pertaining to estate records ever published in the leading Virginia periodicals. Also incorporated in the collection are a number of articles containing abstracts of various companion records--court minutes and deeds, for example--as well as a smaller group of articles dealing with the probate of certain wills in England. Their appearance here--along with an index of 27,000 entries--will spare the genealogist the trouble of searching through hundreds of out-of-the-way volumes and save an untold amount of time in research. The following are the Virginia counties pertaining to which one or more articles may be found in the collection: Accomac, Albemarle, Amherst, Botetourt, Brunswick, Caroline, Charles City, Dinwiddie, Elizabeth City, Fluvanna, Frederick, Fredericksburg, Gooc!
hland, Hampshire (WV), Hanover, Hardy (WV), Isle of Wight, King William, Lancaster, Louisa, Middlesex, Northampton, Petersburg, Pittsylvania, Prince George, Princess Anne, Old Rappahannock, Richmond, Russell, Stafford, Surry, Sussex, Westmoreland, and York.

    TITLE : WorldVitalRecords.com - Wills and Administrations of Surry County, Virginia 1671 - 1750
DESCRIPTION : Wills and Administrations of Surry County, Virginia 1671-1750. Eliza Timberlake Davis. (1955, 1980). Surry County, which was originally part of the Jamestown settlement, figured conspicuously in the early history of the colony of Virginia. This work is a compilation of abstracts of the earliest extant wills and administrations of Surry County, containing abstracts of over 1,250 wills and administrations, with upwards of 7,000 index entries. Covering the eighty-year period between 1671 and 1750, its sweep is sufficient to establish it as the premier source book in Surry County genealogy, and few researchers interested in this early period of Virginia history can afford to overlook it. Typically the will abstracts provide the following data: name of the testator, names of legatees, bequests, names of executors and witnesses, date of instrument, date of probate, and the book and page number wherein the original will is recorded. Administrations, of course, usually!
give the name of the administrators and the date of appointment. Quite a number of inventory appraisals are also given in the work. Needless to say, the will abstracts contain some of the richest genealogical information available, especially the bequests which identify the legatees' relationship to the testator.
