Hi Rosy,
Thanks so much for this.

I am looking for the death of Bessie / Bessy Alma HODGE (nee BREWER). She was born in Teignmouth in 1864.
She married William HODGE in 1882. William died in 1912.

I have them both on the 1911 Census, living with daughters Jessie Elizabeth and Ladysmith Irene, at 9 Worleigh Avenue (not sure if the next word is IVYHAM, as its hard to read) Devonport.
I have had several wrong certs looking for Bessie, so fingers crossed!!

best wishes
Sue

Hi Sue.
I have just been looking on Ancestry, there is a marriage for a Bessie A Hodge to Frederick T Joines in Devonport, Plymouth in 1915. Frederick died aged 65 in Plymouth Mar Qtr 1950 7a 765. Bessie A Joines died aged 86 in 1965 Mar Qtr 7a 753 . So I will check the marriage and the deaths for you. Could it be Keyham on the 1911 as that is a district of Plymouth.

I have found the family on the 1861 including a sister Adelaide born in Scarborough ! two years before Annie Marina ,but can't find them after that. Annie's marriage to Wm Henry Tanner 1877 Plymouth . Will be going to the RO again next Wednesday, will do what I can.

Hi Sunny,
Many thanks for your look up.

I searched for a marriage as you suggested for Bessie Alma Hodge (Brewer) and strangely found two for the same year, same quarter and same place!!

The first was to Samuel Rolstone which rang a bell. He was on the 1911 Census as a boarder with Bessie and her husband. They all worked for GWR.

Frederick Joines I found as you suggested, on Free BMD marrying Bessie Alma Hodge!!!
Perhaps she was a bigamist,lol.

Anyway, I bit the bullet and sent for the marriage cert. It arrived today and it is definitely my Bessie, marrying Samuel Rolstone on 26th June 1915.

All I can think of re the Frederick Joines marriage, if it is not a terrible error, then perhaps Bessie married Frederick in April, he died and she married Samuel in June!!

Many thanks again for your help.

Hi, Sunny -
I'm looking for parish records/baptisms, probably from Crediton and Honiton, possibly Ottery St Mary. The two most important ones are from Crediton. Are you still looking up Devon records?

Thanks

Hi Olga I have been unable to find anything, I understand that Plymouth still keep some of their records at Plymouth RO. They would do a look up for you, but of course it would involve cost. There may be someone in Plymouth on FTF that would have a look for you.

Hi Rosy,

Not sure if you are likely to be in the R O at any time in the near future but if you should find yourself there, I wonder if you could have a look for the following individual:- William Rendle (or similar) b c 1774 Manaton.

In a settlement examination of 1808 he stated he was born in Manaton and then moved to Widecombe. In 1851 his pob was again given as Manaton, his age is shown as 77. His known children were named John and Sarah, which unfortunately are not very distinctive.

Any clues or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Vic. Here you are.

William son of John and Sarah RENNELL baptized on 29/10/1773 at Manaton, Devon
Jinny daughter of John and Sarah RENNELL baptized 12/7/1775 at Manaton.
Susanna daughter of John and Sarah RENNELL baptized 28/4/1777 Manaton
George son of John and Sarah RENNELL baptized 25/12/1777 Manaton.

I looked for a marriage for John and Sarah but was unable to find one, maybe they married in another parish. I also looked for a birth for John but didn't find anything in Manaton.

Hi Rosy,

I've been thinking more about John Rendle/Rennell. I agree it seems a reasonable assumption that he may have been born, and married, in another parish. Also, the fact that there was no John nor Sarah amongst his children baptised in Manaton suggests the possibility that he started his family elsewhere.

IGI has a John Rendle/Sarah Bennett marriage in Lustleigh on 8 Sep 1761, and baptism of daughters Sarah(1765) and Elizabeth(1767). Both location and time frame fits quite neatly into my hypothesis. I know my John later moved from Manaton to Widecombe, and William subsequently lived in Dean Prior and Stokenham so the family has a history of re-location.

Is it possible that you could check the Lustleigh register for any more children of this couple? If none overlap the baptism of William in Manaton in Oct 1773, perhaps you could look to see if there are any matching deaths for the children in Manaton after this date.

I realise that this is all highly speculative and whatever you discover is unlikely to be totally conclusive, so I do not expect you to give a very high priority. Also, if for any reason it is not convenient to take on this request, please let me know.

Dear Rosy,
I have just noticed your offer of look-ups in Exeter, and if u can fit mine in at some time it would be appreciated.

Recently I have run details thru the Forum but the person I am looking for continues to "hide".

Looking for the baptism/birth of H/Anne/Anna Harris, born about 1822 in Plymouth. Her father was Edward Harris a sailor.

Of course any other information relating to her that might show up would be great. Hannah eventually settled in London but I do not
know when she left. The first official record I have is the 1851 Census for Mile End where her birthplace is given as Stepney but that
is incorrect. I cannot find her on the 1841 census.

Many thanks,

Can you give me more details Dreeny, I've looked on the 1851, not under Harris , was she married by then ,if so what was her surname please? I need to familiarize myself with a census record before I set about looking for her. Did you find her father Edward , on the 1841 census? What was her mother's name please?

Hi Rosy.

I have not been able to attribute any entry in 1841 to Edward Harris and family either in London or Devon, the Harris name is a sticking point. I do not know when they or,
perhaps, just Hannah came into London and the first thing is the 1851 census for Stepney when she had become Hannah UNDERWOOD although she did not marry Joseph Underwood
until 1854. I believe Joseph or the Enumerator "dittoed" the birthplace for the whole family as Stepney/Mile End. On the 1861 and 1871, when Joseph had died and Hannah was "Head"
she states Plymouth,Devon and, of course, her father was a sailor. I do not know the name of her mother which would, of course, make identifying the family a lot easier.

One other possible clue is on the Marriage Certificate of my GGGrandparents Mary Ann Gage & John Ames in 1838. One of the witnesses to their marriage was a James Harris who might
be a relative of Hannah,s. Later one of Mary Ann's daughters(my gt.grandmother) married Hannah's eldest son Joseph.

Thanks Rosy.

Hi Rosy, any chance you could do another look-up for me, please?

I am trying to identify a Charlotte Burford, wife of William, who in each census 1841-71 is recorded as born circa 1811, variously at Clist/Bishops Clist/St Marys Clist.
IGI has a marriage between William Burford/Charlotte Loveridge at St George, Exeter, 28 July 1834, which I think could refer.

Could you check Clyst St Mary baptisms for a Charlotte Loveridge, b c 1811, please.

Brentor boy.

Charlotte Loveridge baptised 2/6/1805 married William Burford 28/7/1834 Clyst St Mary,Devon.
Her parents were John Loveridge and his wife Letitia, I was unable to find a marriage for them as the records don't exist before 1837 for that, courtesy of Hitler. They had Charlotte 1805, Harriet born 21/9/1811 baptised 13/10/1811, Eliza baptised 26/1/1816, Anne baptised 23/9/1818 and Sarah baptised 6/1/1820

Hi Rosy,

Many, many thanks. That is exactly what I hoped the record would show. IGI has John Loveridge marrying Laetitia (sic) Goldsworthy 1 Feb 1803, Sowton. A son, Charles, was baptised Sowton 11 Sep 1803. Strange that Charlotte's year of birth should be shown as 1811 on census returns but I am satisfied that this is the right family as I have a will dated 1834 which refers to Letitia (then Raymond - John Loveridge died 1825) and her daughter Charlotte Burford. I have yet to find record of Letitia's second (third?) marriage to Richard Raymond.

Vic. Unfortunately I was still unable to find anything for John Loveridge and Laetitia Goldsworthy in Sowton or Clyst st Mary. Neither could I find Charles birth/baptism., despite looking through the whole of the records for Sowton from about 1700..I went out to Sowton Village on saturday but couldn't find any gravestones with either Loveridge or Goldsworthy on them. I spoke with the treasurer of the Village Hall who lives opposite the church and he gave me the Church Wardens telephone number, I plan to ring him to see if they keep any records in the vestry. If they do I will go out again. ( I am going out there anyway to take some pictures of some cottages for someone else on the forum) Couldn't find a marriage for Richard Raymond and Laetitia , was the RR that died in 1869 Laetitia's husband, he died in Crediton district?
Will keep looking

Thanks, Rosy. You really are going above and beyond the call of duty!

I obtained details of Charles Loveridge's baptism from Family Search. Strange that you could not find it.

The "Devon Wills Project" has record of the grant of Admon to Letitia, of Exeter, widow of John Loveridge, of Clyst St Mary, in 1825.

IGI has a Letitia Loveridge/William Westcott marriage - St George Exeter 14 Oct 1826. If this is the same Letitia, it further muddies the waters.

Richard Raymond was from Sidbury. If he married Letitia there then I think we may be at a dead end as I understand marriage registers for that period were destroyed in a flood. According to RR's will, dated September 1834, by which time he was married to Letitia, he died on 29 January 1836 (late of Sidbury)
