try googling the persons full name and see what comes up - i had a major success with that.
also try local libraries for the areas the people lived and hope they have the local papers on microfiche. i havent found any sites that have newspapers online from 1930 unless you pay
also see if any of your family are in the WW2 records at commonwealth war graves commission website.

It's usually 'work' (though that's a surprisingly blanket word) I think - although you'll have to follow up what leads you can.
My g-g-father was born in Barkingside, Essex, but brought up in Cookham, Berks. I tend to presume it was just a question of where the work was for the breadwinner.
