  • potman?

i thought i would take a fresh look into james conway my butler in 1871. well i found a james conway b.1848, barking essex, in a tavern in the woolwich arsenal in kent. occupation potman. the others in the tavern are servants of some kind and a cook. what was a potman? would the tavern have hired him? would it be some kind of butler?

    There's a definition here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/g.../trades.html#P

"A person who worked in public houses washing and removing dirty pots also did other menial tasks"

I have someone who I was told was a chef in my tree but when I got one of his children's birth certs, his occupation was 'potman'.
