  • Rutland Forum....Is it always so quiet?

    Hi all,

Does anyone here also use the online Rutland Forum? Is it always so quite? I joined in Nov as a lot of my ancestors were from Rutland England so I thought I may find some really good information on there but everytime I go on...I'm the only one on there & hardly anyone seems to be reading the posts.

      Hi Val,

If i've done it properly the link below should work....it looks like a well done site but it just needs a few more members I think

The link works. I expect as it's such a small county not many people are going to join. I live in Rutland and belong to the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society and have never heard of that forum.

The trouble is, Rutland is so very small compared with other counties. It follows that there have never been as many people who lived there .... hence the quiet forum.

I have a similar problem with Bedfordshire ... again quite a small county and I have never found any "county" information relating to my family (the whole of my Dad's side!!!) who all lived in Bedfordshire for 300 years. :( Some of them were quite prominent in the community but the information I have is gleaned from other sources than "County" ones and not forums or the Bedfordshire FHS.

I have a couple of (indirect) WARRs who spent time in Rutland before moving on to Stamford.

I had a look at the site. There are a few recent posts, but the logic behind a low "footfall" has already been posted above.

I think they might usefully take to the convention of putting all the surnames in upper case. They have a thread about surnames originating in Rutland, and not a single name stands out because none is in upper case, so they all blend into the surrounding text!

I belong to a similar, very small, very specialised forum and we had a very similar problem in the beginning, weeks would go by without any posts.

Gradually though, it has picked up and is now fairly lively, so you probably need to persevere and be a bit patient, lol! We have only 80 members and as usual, most of those don't post anyway.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm glad the link works ;D It does look like it would be a good site if it had more people on there, especially as it seems a few of us have ancestors from Rutland. Christine I hope you don't mind but i've mentioned your very good idea about putting the surnames in upper case. It's reasuring to read your post OC. Hopefully more people that didn't know it was there may see this post & have a look. Thank you all for your help

That's fine. I only picked it up, myself, from seeing what's already done in a number of places. Once you've seen it done, it's so obvious! I guess it may not spring to mind straight away because upper-case is otherwise used for "shouting"... Bu then, I suppose, if you're sharing research info, "shouting" a surname is likely to be useful for attracting attention of others who recognise a it as one they're interested in!

If you're passing on ideas to them, it might be worth them checking that their House Rules (I forget how they've described them) include UK translations of the USA-English. For example: "5th Grade" doesn't mean all that much to UK people, as a description of how far someone is in going through school. I think we can cope with other differences, such as American spelling.

I see what you are saying about "5th Grade" I wouldn't have a clue what UK school year that would be.

I've put my Rutland surname interests on there so you never know I may find others researching the same people as me.

                                Welcome to family tree forum....

Here is the link to the Rutland Forum but i'm afraid it still seems very quiet on there....although that said it may well be worth you posting your surname interests you never know:

I belong to Northants but whereas a couple of years ago I was getting notifications several times a day, I now hardly get anything so I am wondering if it is just that people do not use them so often these days.

Incidentally on the same subject I belong to a Cork forum and this morning received a notification suggesting I try a link. I am always careful about opening spam mail but this came trhough under the guise of the Cork Forum rootsweb so not suspicious I opened mail on the link to find a viagra advert. I deleted immediately and hot on the heels of this mail came a message from the Cork Forum to say they had been attacked and not to open the mail from this particular person but too late I had already done so. I am now quite worried as up to now spam is quite obvious, but hidden within a genealogical forum like this is a different proposition.

If there's any possible doubt about a link, you can usually tell what the real address is if you hover the cursor over the top: the address would normally appear in the bottom bar of the window. Like this. Unless anything untoward has occurred, that should only take you back to the home page of FTF.
