I don't know the London areas but what about these two? The children ages would fit but I haven't seen the 1861 like you have and I don't know when/where they were both born.

Well, I suppose a possible explanation is they got cold feet and didn't marry when the Banns were called! :)
Cannot see an earlier marriage for them.

Great minds think alike Elaine :D

I wonder if the first marriage has been missed and they were just renewing their vows? Mind you, I haven't heard of that until recent times.

Banns aren't valid indefinitely. From the Marriage Act 1949

12Solemnization of marriage after publication of banns

(1)Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act, where banns of matrimony have been published, the marriage shall be solemnized in the church or chapel or, as the case may be, one of the churches or chapels in which the banns have been published.

(2)Where a marriage is not solemnized within three months after the completion of the publication of the banns, that publication shall be void and no clergyman shall solemnize the marriage on the authority thereof. (my bold-formatting)

Although that is from 1949, I believe that a similar provision prevailed in earlier times.

thanks for that Christine , its very odd isnt it ? am trying to tie up the records to see whats what .

I had some thoughts...

mistranscribed dates
different (generation of) couples with similar names
marriage wasn't tied to that set of banns

I don't have Ancestry so can't tell which (if any) is feasible out of those.

Was the actual marriage by banns or licence?

Perhaps there was an objection at the reading of the banns stage first time round?
