I expect this is a silly question but anyway....

I have got a Census ref from the WDYTYA Lanarkshire disc which may be my 2x Gt Grandfather.

Can anyone tell me if it is likely I can view the microfilm in my local library as I think they have a lot of family history micro-films there.
If not - apart from going to Glasgow  where would you suggest?

As I said, probably a silly question

Thanks

What is the census ref and I'll look it up for you on Ancestry.

Thanks OC

I'm subscribed to Ancestry but the last time I looked they didn't have the images....do they have them now then?

No but the images are on ScotlandsPeople. I think I have a few credits. What details do you have?

Just checked - I have 23 credits, should be more than enough.

That's really kind of you Uncle John, but I couldn't expect you to use them up on my account!

Hi Allie
Ancestry do have more information on the Scottish censuses than they used to have ..... I'd not looked on it for a couple of months and was pleasantly surprised.

As they say

'Unfortunately, we are unable to display the accompanying images of this census at present, despite extensive negotiation with the General Register Office for Scotland.
Ancestry has heavily transcribed the Scottish Census Records to ensure you have access to all key areas of information .... '

I have got a Census ref from the WDYTYA Lanarkshire disc which may be my 2x Gt Grandfather.

Would it be ever so cheeky to ask if there are any refs. on it to the surname Dobbie (specifically in Airdrie)? The ad. in Radio Times doesn't say what info. is on the CD apart from the 1851 census.

It shouldn't take more than 5 or 6 credits to locate and download your census image.

Thanks Rachel and Uncle John.

I'll have a look on the disc for the DOBBIE surname, OJ. I was having trouble with it on the PC but will try it on the Mac.

The ref for my fellow is

GEORGE SOM(M)ERVILLE (aged 10 here)
Birthplace - Libberton
Parish - Carstairs

District 2 Page 13 No. 12

Hope that is ok!

Thanks!

Allie - the last family is mine. The youngest daughter Isabella is my great-grandmother.
I take it there's nothing else on the disc which might help.

Your family:

HEAD: John Somerville, 26, unmarried, Tollkeeper, born Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire
BROTHER: George Somerville, 10, errand boy, born Liberton, Lanarkshire

The address is ?Boroford? Tollhouse, Carstairs.

Would you like the image?

EDIT: The correct spelling is Libberton, a tiny place on the road from Carnwath to Biggar.

I was in that general area only a few weeks ago, visitng New Lanark on the way home from a wedding.

I don't suppose it has any marriages that took place at Wishaw House, Cambusnethan does it ?

Just popped in for a quick look on here for now, so will be back later......

Uncle John - thanks for the look-up. This could be my man - presumably the JOHN is his Dad (though says unmarried) - my Gt Grandfather and Grandfather were also JOHN but maybe I'm assuming too much!
Shall PM my email as you kindly have offered to send me the image. Thanks!

Rachel - shall have a look later - not sure if they have any marriages. I think it's just the 1851 Census index.
In fact I was a little disappointed with the disc as there are only a few images on there and you would be lucky to find your rellie on the two police records they have!

Allie - you could look for them in 1841, to see if a parent appears. The 1851 census clearly has them as Head and Brother, but there's a 16 year age gap, which could mean anything!

How about this lot (Ancestry 1841 transcription) living in Libberton, with a 6-month-old George:

Adam Somerville 5
Adams Somerville 40
Agnes Somerville 7
Euphemia Somerville 14
George Somerville 6 Mo
Grizzel Somerville 35
James Somerville 10
John Somerville 15
William Somerville 2

Thanks for those :) although my man has his dob as 1843, that's from 1871 census, so he may not have been too sure by then.....

Rachel

GRIZZEL - the sort of name you're glad you didn't inherit ( almost as bad as my Gran's GERTRUDE!)

Uncle John

Every Scottish family should have a Euphemia. My wife's has one in nearly every generation. I had heard of Griselda, which sounds a lot nicer than Grizzel. Maybe that's what she did as a baby.

Rachel Scand

I don't have a Euphemia :p

Had a Gerty goldfish as a wee thing and there was somebody known as auntie Gert (not related I think)

The name Gertrude is quite pleasant, it makes me think of grapefruits

But the name Euphemia really appeals to me :)

Just been back to Ancestry and I'm almost sure this is GEORGE in 1861 with family in London

RG9; Piece: 184 Folio: 55 Page: 52

Mother is JANE 1812
Brother HUGH 1845
Sister ISABELLA 1840

The reason I think it's him is that he was a Hotel Porter (dec) on his son's marriage cert. and in 1861 he is down as a WAITER.

So I am now looking for a Scottish family before 1861 like this :o

Probably not from Lanarkshire after all........
