Found a book on google book search which mentions my 4 great grandfather George Alfred Hodson and appears to have some information I've never seen before.
Unfortunately it's only showing snippets of the book and cuts off after about two sentences.
The other thing making intriguing me is that it says he was an English songwriter whereas all my other evidence shows him to be Irish, Grrrrrr!!
Google books tells me it's held at the following Libraries:
British Library in Wetherby (??)
University Libraries:
Cambridge
Glasgow
Queen's Belfast
Leicester
Leeds
London
Nottingham
Oxford
Bangor
Westminster Library
If anyone uses one of these and can copy the page(s) for me I'd be very grateful.
It is possible I could get to Westminster but I'd have to take a day off work and I don't think that's going to be possible until end of June!!
The book I'm after is this one:
The Science of Music in Britain, 1714-1830 : a catalogue of writings, lectures, and inventions
by Jamie Croy Kassler
and George appears on page 518.
Thanks in advance
Z

You should be able to get photocopies of the pages you want from your local library via the inter-library lending system. It would cost a small amount.

oooooh - how do I do that then?
Do I just give them the isbn number and the pages I need?

Go to your library and tell them what you want. They will order a photocopy from the British Library in Boston Spa (Wetherby). They will fill in a form and the ISBN and page numbers will help.

yaaaaaaaay
Thank you Nell
Now if only I hadn't swapped my night shift for a day shift tomorrow I could go and do it in the morning.

See if you can find a member posting from the US, and ask them to try the link. Sometimes they get the full view when we only get snippets.

I'm just being nosy here as I don't go to any of those libraries, but it seems as though that entry on page 518 starts:
HODSON, George Alexander (d.l863). INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PIANOFORTE WITH PROGRESSIVE LESSONS. Dublin: Published by the author, Dublin Musical Repository l08 Graf- ton Street, (c.l830). Source: DUBLIN LITERARY GAZETTE (l830): advertisements for June (p. 4ll). GA Hodson was an English song writer, who was active in Dublin between...
So is this your George or a different one?

............between 1815 - 1831. He was music director of the Crow Street theatre until it closed in 1820, and in 1822 he was described as a teacher of singing in Dame Street. In 1825 he succeeded Jonathan Blewitt as organist of St. Andrew's Church, and from 1827.................
Then you need to google "St. Andrew's Church, and from 1827" and it will give you the next bit! lol

Oh well done, Merry. I got stuck at "between"!

I've often tried that trick, but it rarely works - they must have fixed their program somehow to prevent you from doing it.

Definitely my George, Kate
I have him in Dublin directories at 108 Grafton Street.
So........... The bit that has me stumped is this
GA Hodson was an English song writer, who was active in Dublin between...
would you read that as he was English and he was a songwriter OR he wrote songs in English???
Merry Monty Montgomery
16-05-08, 12:40
Oh dear! Maybe you and I have done it too many times, Mary!!
(cont)
.....from 1827-1831 he had a music selling and publishing business at 108 Grafton Street
(It won't let me have any more! I blame Mary!!! lol)

If they give him the wrong middle name, then I would think it's quite likely they got the "English" bit wrong too.

I can't blame them for that - most of the time he couldn't decide what he wanted to be called.
Alexander and Alfred are interchangeable.
I have suspicions that he was never actually given either of them by his parents - but as yet I've not been able to locate a baptism for him so I don't know for sure.
Can you not email the librarian direct, Zoe? I did that for an extract I found on Google Book search....the librarian in Melbourne was most helpful and posted me a photocopy free of charge.
Zoe,
I tried looking for George Alfred Hodson on the LiveSearch Books site at Live Search (http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=&scope=books) and found just one reference in a biography of his daughter Georgia. It's page 178 of History of the American Stage, and the full book is available on the site.
Thought I'd mention it in case you've not seen it.

That's a brilliant resource
I've found a couple more for him as plain old George Hodson
Thank you

Oooh, I've not used that LIve Books before, it's FAB!! I've just found a book detailing a completely fabricated tree about my rellies! I know it's wrong (much grander than the truth), but it's still great!

Is anyone able to view the following:
on the link from hughar above
search for "George Hodson" on page 4 of the results a book called "From Sawdust to Windsor castle"
I can't get the book to load

Zoe - you should be able to ask your local library to do an inter-library loan. I got a book from Newcastle University Library via Beds. Libraries for the princely sum of 50p. I was quite surprised - it was a modern privately published book currently retailing at over £200. They located a number of copies but Newcastle Uni. was the only one prepared to do a loan.

I can load the book. It doesn't say much, just that his dau was Henrietta who married that MP bloke (Henry L)
Also that George was at one time the manager of the "Bower" ("a sordid place of entertainment")
Does that mean this isn't the right George? Wasn't George b 1798ish Henrietta's grandfather?

No, the Bower is one of Zoe's :)

I didn't mean completely the wrong George, just that he's a generation forward compared to the one we are looking for (I think)
The page before says that George Hodson was a once popular Irish Comedian.

Merry,
It's a mass of confusion generally
You're right in the George c1798 was the father of George c1822 and grandfather of Henrietta
But not all the biographies and general accounts realise that there were two George Alfred's as both were singers who composed and appeared on stage doing Irish comedy characters.
George the grandfather (c1798) was the manager of the Apollo Saloon at teh Yorkshire STingo and then the Bower Saloon at the Duke's Tavern. He taught music in Dublin and had the shop at 108 Grafton Street.
George the father started out as a chorister at various churches and cathedrals in Dublin aged about 8 and was bought here by his father where he married another actress (Henrietta Noel) who gave borth to Henrietta in the orchestra pit of the Bower Saloon (allegedly)
I think, anyway. I have somewhere a transcription of a biography of Joseph A Cave that clarifies it very well as he worked for/with them.
Neither of these should be confused with Georgia (aka Georgina and Georgiana) Hodson daughter of 1798/sister of 1822 who was also a singer and went to America before settling in Australia

aaaaaaaaah - but they may be right
If I'm thinking the book is about the right thing, that is
The George Hodson who performed for Queen Victoria was George 1822
Unless I've got the wrong end of the stick about the book title

I've just been experimenting - in the searches I've done the Google web search performs better than the Microsoft Live Search, but the Microsoft book search seems better than the Google book search because it mostly shows whole pages or books rather than snippets (so far).

You can limit your Google book searches to whole books/ pages if you dont want to bother with snippets.
Mary from Italy
16-05-08, 18:38
Yes, I knew that - I don't limit them because some of the snippets contain really interesting information, and it's so frustrating when you can't get the rest of the page, whereas so far, with the Live Search, nearly all the hits I've found have allowed me to see the whole book.
The other annoying thing with the Google book search is that although the typewritten part always shows your search terms, they sometimes don't show up in the snippet image at all, presumably due to a software glitch.
If you only find a snippet at Google Books, it's often worth repeating the search at Live Search (http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=&scope=books)
or looking for the same book (by title) among the texts at Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org/index.php)

Using the Live Book search, I've just come across this gem:

It's quite interesting!
