EDIT: I've got three copies of these instuctions posted on here and it's becoming awkward to keep them all up to date with changes.

Therefore, I have moved them to a page on my web server.

Click here for the instructions! (http://www.puseyuk.co.uk/temp/ftf/gr-popup-solution.html)

Thanks Dave. Brilliant!

I haven't been on GR since I heard about the problem, but I know that I have messages waiting for me. I guess that if I add this to hosts, I should be quite safe.

It doesn't seem to work on Windows ME - it just says it can't find it. But my solution is to stay off GR until they sort it out!

Kite, try putting WinDir in place of system32...like this:

notepad c:\WINDOWS\WinDir\drivers\etc\hosts

I think that should work for ME.

KiteRunner

No, it says it can't open that one either, but never mind. Thanks anyway.

why is it after I did this I went to GR and there is still an ad showing ???or is this only for pop ups thanks Dave

WendyPusey
02-02-08, 13:56
It is only for that specific pop up Ad Val. It won't stop any other Pop Ups.

Val, I thought you had Firefox? You need to download the Adblock and Flashblock extensions.

Mary where are they thanks ???

Ive got Firefox - if you go to tools then add ons Val

But people, is it this one to download please?

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

Thing is it then gives you a choice of filters or something - which do you choose please? Ive added the Easy List - is that the right one?

EasyList General list with main focus on English-language sites. Maintainer: rick752. List, Homepage, Forum Subs

That's right.

I had an older version of Adblock which also needed the Flashblock add-on, but apparently the newer Adblock Plus doesn't need it. However, it is a good idea to add the Easy List.

Thanks Mary. Ive been over to GR and Im not getting any of the ads or anything now. :)

Last night I did an AdAware scan, which has shown 2 'critical objects' - but they seem to say critical for lots of things! - which are now 'quarantined'.

This morning I've done a Norton full system scan - which detected nothing.

And I haven't been on GR since yesterday, when I got that Protection Optmizer thing.

BUT my computer is running very slowly - do I need to do Dave's pop-up blocker? Is that why it's slow? Or have I messed it up in another way?? :o

Any 'experts' - or even interested onlookers - out there?

(Edit - I'll check back in an hour or so.)

Bee.

As long as you didn't go to the wesite it was directing you to you shouldn't have any problems with the PC. It is only downloading a popup which is trying to frighten you by saying that you have a virus, and to go to this website to get rid of it.

If you do what Dave has advised it will stop the download from appearing.

I don't think this would effect the speed of your PC.

You should be fine. This is a virus/nasty/whatever you want to call it, that targets Windows based computers only.

Can you add an AdBlocker to your PC Rachel? That will stop the ad pop ups from loading.

Visit Heather's link from within firefox and just single left click on the big green Install Now button. For me, it pops up a Software Installation box, and I just click on Install Now.

Just found that via google.... might work....

If Firefox brings up an installation prompt, click "Install". If it asks you if you want to open or save the file, open the file with Firefox as the application. Alternatively, you can save the file to disk and drag it on to the Firefox window.

Thankyou ever so much Dave, i dragged it to the firefox window-clever me.......Lol :D

The bar along the top of the firefox has in red ABP, and it has "Adblock Plus is enabled"

Much Appreciated - your a gem !!

Jacky xx :D

Opps, i have just gone to GR and the ads are still there...........What am i like!!

You need to add some subscriptions (free lists of filter rules) to Adblock Plus for it to work

Go to Adblock Plus: Known Adblock Plus subscriptions (http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions) and click on...

EasyList and EasyElement and ABP Tracking Filter

Is that when trying to go to the the link i posted, or when you try to click on the subscribe links once you're on that page?

Also, what version Firefox are you running? (click Help/About on the menu)

Mary from Italy

That page works for me, but if you still can't get it, try this one:

EasyList Filter Subscriptions for Adblock Plus - rick752 (http://easylist.adblockplus.org/)
