Hard to say Chrissie. However, the 1861 chap says he was born in Berkeley and in 1851 there is a John Long who also says he was born there but in 1802.

Thanks Merry, it looks like he could of been married twice, might look into that tomorrow

1841 and 1851 both feature Isabella. Perhaps the Sarah from 1841 was his sister, not his wife?

This baptism doesn't give mother's name:

JNO LONG Christening: 03 FEB 1804 Berkeley, Gloucester, England
Parents: Father: JAMES LONG
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.
Source Information: Batch No.: C016483

The batch number also gives christening same date, place and father for a
William Long and for
Elizabeth Long 14 Nov 1802
Daniel Long 23 Oct 1804

though these may not be your chap and his siblings, they are probably related along the line somewhere.

Berkeley and Hawkesbury aren't that far apart but I would want some evidence there wasn't another John Long of Hawkesbury just to confirm I had the right chap.

Good luck - I couldn't see one on familysearch. Might be one listed on Boyd's or Pallot's. Fingers crossed!

Thanks Merry, it looks like he could of been married twice, might look into that tomorrow

Not quite sure what you mean Chrissie......

I was just meaning that in 1851 there are two different men; one who is the same person you found in 1841 and one who may be the man you found in 1861.

This is probably the man you found in 1861 on the 1841 census:

John Long 35 Ag lab Yes <<<<<<<<<<<<<
Ann Long 35 Yes
John Long 14 Yes
Henry Long 9 Yes

at Berkeley, Gloucestershire

Or this could be him at the same place

John Long 40 Labourer Yes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Jenita Long 30 Yes
Irine Long 6 Yes
Catharine Long 4 Yes
Jane Long 4 Yes

I'm confused about which record is definitely yours?

So this is his elder son?

Deaths Dec 1893
Long John George aged 67 Barton R. 6a 119

So wouldn't these be the right ones in 1841?

John Long 35 Ag lab Yes
Ann Long 35 Yes
John Long 14 Yes
Henry Long 9 Yes

at Berkeley, Gloucestershire

They are one of the two families I found as potential matches for the 1861 John Long you found.

Merry Monty Montgomery

I presume this is the elder son in 1891 (I expect you have all this already, but I'm just trying to join the two ends!)

John Long 65 b Westbury on Trym
Mary 65 ditto
Edith granddaughter 10 ditto

In 1881 Edith is with her parents, Jesse (21) and Caroline, so presume Jesse is the son of John (1827)?

1871

John 45
Mary 45
Jesse 10
Lucy 7
George 4
Edward 2

John says Westbury on Trym for his place of birth on all the above, but I can't yet see him in 1851 and 1861.

Merry Monty Montgomery

John George Long's wife, Mary is from Alveston Wilts.

In 1861 the family seem to be called Cook!! They are in the same street as in 1871

John 35
Mary 35 Alveston
Annie 12 Earthcott (or something like that!)
Harriet 9 W-o-T
Mary Ann 7 ditto
Agnes 5 ditto
Ada 3 ditto
Jesse 1 ditto

1861 Cook again.....

John 24
Mary Ann 24 Earthcott
Thomas 5 ditto
Ann 1 ditto

In case they are different people, I have tried to find the Cook people on later censuses, without success.
