Thunderbird is Mozilla's equivalent to Microsoft's Outlook or Windows Mail.

It's FREE FREE FREE and Open Source.

My instructions have been written (on Vista) for use with 'googlemail' but it shouldn't be too difficult (subject to slight option changes in the procedures) to use the instructions for other email providers.

You should hopefully be setup to go now, pretty much the same as if you were using Outlook or Windows Mail.

Ever helpful John!

It might not be a bad idea if you (the person reading this) have plenty of space to download it and keep it as a back up, in case the primary source where you look at/download your emails goes belly up. This also applies to having a spare browser stored on your computer for the same reasons.

Whereabouts can you get the details of the POP and outgoing server?
I'm using fsmail (orange) at the moment, and I'm having trouble setting TB up
Thanks
L

PS Now sorted, fsmail is web based, and therefore hasn't got POP etc. now got a gmail addy

Hi It Is I Leclerc

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. Happy to see you are sorted now though.

I have attached this link which shows different Incoming/Out Going Email server settings. It may help with your fsmail along with others.

http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/mail-settings.html (http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/mail-settings.html)

I am glad to see you've gone for gmail. I use this and therefore am not reliant on any ISP's service. I can keep the same gmail email addresses and don't have to change any email settings even if I change ISP.

Hi John
Yes I've got two gmail addy's but try as I may I can't configure them like you have with both of them listed in the left hand pane, any advise
Cheers

Hi Leclerc

You should be able to do it via "Tools" on the top menu bar.

Then select "Account settings"

Then click on the "Add Account" button.

Choose "Google Mail" as you say you have gmail addies and click on "Next"

Then follow the instructions ...

Is the above any help? How far are you getting?

Just thought, if you've done all that then check your view layout.

From the Tool bar at the top again.

Select "View"

Highlight "Layout" from the list.

Then select "Classic View"

and also make sure "Message Pane F8" is ticked. Click on it if it isn't.

Has this changed your layout view?

It looks like you've set one up as it's in the left hand pane.

Now, in the small box (for the second address) you have displayed what happens when you click on "OK"?

It_Is_I_Leclerc

I've pressed OK but the screen looks exactly the same, I can access the 2nd email addy via the one in the LH pane but they won't list as seperates

Very strange. When I add a new account it just appears on the left hand pane seperate to what currently exists.

Have you tried closing and restarting Thunderbird to see if it appears? I will have to see if I can google something about your issue. May not be until tomorrow now as it's currently 00:05am here and I still have a few things to do.

Cheers John
I'll have a go at deleting the addy's and then restart from the beginning
L

I deleted the addy's, restarted TB, then added the addy's one by one and hey! it works. Thanks again for your help John
Cheers

I am having the same trouble only one email address is showing ??
Shall see if I can add them again

Val
What I did was:
a) delete the addy's I had
b) shut down TB
c) restart TB and add the 1st addy
d) repeat b) & c) for the 2nd addy
Then it was OK

Hi L, That's very good news! :D Saying that though I can add email addies and they appear immediately without shutting down TB. Well, we've got a workaround now if people have the same problem.

Val, How are you getting on?

Hi Val,

I've done a bit of googling as I don't use Hotmail, MSM or Yahoo myself. From what I can tell it appears that these three don't directly support POP which is what you need to download your emails to Thunderbird.

However, it looks as though you may be able to install addons to Thunderbird which get around this problem. I found the following links:

http://digg.com/software/Check_Hotmail_and_Yahoo_e-mail_in_Thunderbird (http://digg.com/software/Check_Hotmail_and_Yahoo_e-mail_in_Thunderbird)_

http://webmail.mozdev.org/index.html (http://webmail.mozdev.org/index.html)

You may want to read through the Webmail information (above link) and see what you think.

Before looking at the above links I suggest that the first port of call is to ask Hotmail, Yahoo, etc if they support POP (and what are their POP/SMTP configuration settings, ie. Port Numbers, POP server name and SMTP server name) as you want to use Thunderbird/Outlook to read your emails. If they say they don't support POP then the next step would be to read the information in the links I provided above.

With any email service that supports POP (like gmail/googlemail/virgin, etc) you should be able to download emails to Thunderbird without a problem. Have you thought about using googlemail, it is free?

After speaking to your email providers and reading the info at the above links you are still having problems but still want to go ahead and download your mentioned emails to Thunderbird let me know. I will look at opening a Hotmail account and downloading the addons to Thunderbird myself to see what needs doing. I won't be able to do this for a couple of weeks though but please do let me know.

I am thinking about adding this. Just wonder if you know the answers to the following
Do I have to have Mozilla Firefox?
Would it cause problems as I already have Windows Live Mail?
Can I send e mails with animated graphics?
Thanks

Hi Marilyn,

Thunderbird is separate to Firefox. So you don't need Firefox if you don't want it.

I have Windows Mail, Thunderbird and Outlook installed. I don't use Windows Mail though, never been keen on it.

I have Thunderbird and Outlook open and running at the same time (if I wanted to I could have Windows Mail open and running at the same time as well).

However, I have a number of email addresses. Some email addresses are set up for Thunderbird and others are setup for Outlook.

e.g. emails that are sent from or received by email addresses aaa@email.com (aaa@email.com), bbb@email.com (bbb@email.com) and ccc@email.com (ccc@email.com) will be done using Thunderbird

and

emails that are sent from or received by email addresses xxx@email.com (xxx@email.com), yyy@email.com (yyy@email.com) and zzz@email.com (zzz@email.com) will be done using Outlook.

If you for example only have one email address that you have setup to use with both Windows Mail and Thunderbird and they are both open and running at the same time you may well get problems. It is best to keep one set of email addresses for use only with Windows Mail and another set of email addresses for use only with Thunderbird.

You can send emails with animated graphics using Thunderbird. Whether the receiver of your email(s) will see the animated graphics will of course depend on what email client they use and whether it supports animated graphics.

Hope that helps a little.
