View Full Version : Hendersons with a wanderlust

James Henderson b. abt. 1822 Aberdeen (from English censuses 1861 to 1901)
married
Anna Maria Clarissa (unknown) b. abt 1826 Dublin (together as a married couple on all the above censuses).
Marriage is likely to be in South Australia, given as place of birth for first 2 children:
Hamilton Gerald Henderson b. abt 1849 and
Charles B Henderson b. abt 1851.
They must have returned to England almost immediately because the next child is
Mary Louise Henderson b. q4 1852 Southampton.
They had 5 more children between 1855 and 1866, all born Truro.
I have most of the family in Cornwall in all the following censuses - 1861 (Truro), 1871-1901 Kenwyn.
So can sks please find the marriage and the first 2 births. I have no experience at all with Australian records. I'm pretty certain James was a mining engineer.
The next generation also went walkabout.
Hamilton Gerald Henderson (see above), also a mining engineer, is in Kenwyn in 1861, 1891 and 1901.
Between 1861 and 1891 he got married (Isabelle M unknown), went to India (first 2 children Constance and Millicent born 1876 and 1877 in Madras) and then to St Croix, Danish West Indies (next 2 children James and Charles born there 1883 and 1885), returned to England (next child Marjorie born Folkestone q2 1886) and finally to Kenwyn where last child Robert was born q1 1890.
I have had a poke around Indian records without success but I have no clue where I'll find the St. Croix births. Until I started on this branch I had no idea the Danes colonised the West Indies.
Any news or ideas on this lot will be most welcome. I'm confident I've found everyone via the English censuses, linked by grandchildren being boarded out while their parents were abroad.

Silly Q, but have you looked in the IGI? They do have some records for St Croix, but as my geography is sadly wanting, I don't know if this is YOUR St Croix, sorry!

I can't find any reference in the IGI to the West Indies (Lesser Antilles to be more precise). Hugh Wallis hasn't indexed that region. St Croix is at the western end of the Lesser Antilles (Windward Islands), nearest to Puerto Rico.

The name's quite a coincidence, but the parents seem to be wrong.

There's a public member tree on Ancestry which contains the family. Isabella's named as "Isabella Jessie Mulready formerly Carter".

How interesting, Mary. Wrong father (if he was a lost one of mine it would be Hamilton Gerald) and the marriage date is a few years too early.

Ooh Mary, what a cornucopia. Hamilton's wife's name, three Indian baps. and a possible link into another Henderson connection.
How did you find the baps.? I was completely stumped.
And I was already pretty sure Isabella Jessie was a Carter. I found her mother Sarah and sisters looking after some stray Henderson children in Cheriton, Kent.

All of Hamilton and Isabella's children seem to be Seton Hendersons. I'm now wonderig where the Seton came from.

I think its a transcription error. The source call number for all three of my baps. is the Bishop's Transcripts for Madras, so the handful of Medomsley baps. must have the wrong source call number.

How did you find the baps.?
I found them by using All Resources on the familysearch site instead of the IGI.
I found the St. Croix one on the IGI by choosing "Caribbean Islands" as the region.

By the way, there's one reference to the family on Google book search if you search for Isabella, and a few in the Times if you search for Hamilton.
I can't find Isabella's birth at all on FreeBMD, which is odd - have you tried?
Uncle John
19-12-07, 18:44
Right then, Times Archive here we come.
Hamilton seems to have been an artillery officer and was posted to Madras in 1870. Then I lose sight of him until he turns up in Cornwall in 1891, a civil engineer.
The only other likely refs. in The Times were to the death of the widow of his youngest son, who had acquired the further suffix Bull on marriage, and to his grandson's engagement.

I found the St. Croix one on the IGI by choosing "Caribbean Islands" as the region.
But I can't find "Caribbean Islands" as an option on the IGI. What am I doing wrong?

Click on Region. It's the one immediately after British Isles :)

Ah I see now. A general search of all countries and then pick from the list on the right. No sign of my Henderson baps. in the Caribbean.

There's a public member tree on Ancestry which contains the family. Isabella's named as "Isabella Jessie Mulready formerly Carter".
I've now sent the owner a message (he seems to be in Colchester).
And I've had a reply. He has a parallel family stranded somewhere in India and is fishing for connections.

I don't think there's anything online for South Australia. If you're a member of GR, Kerri's doing SA lookups on the Records Office board.
I contacted Kerri this morning (UK time) and she came back almost immediately with piles of useful information. Has anyone invited her to join FTF?

She's always very helpful, as is Cherilyn, who also does Australian look-ups (but not SA). I don't know if anyone's specifically invited them to join, but they've both been on GR for quite a while, so I assume they know FTF exists.
Update: I checked the members' list, and Kerri's already here. I remember seeing her name now:
