Does anyone know what has happened to xcounters.com who provided free web counters.
Have just realised that the web counter on my home page has disappeared (as has Heatherīs and Glenīs - not sure if they have noticed!!!)
Does anyone know where to get another free web counter?

Looks as if xcounters.com is no more! Web page not accessible.
For anyone interested I have installed one via http://my.statcounter.com - quite easy to do. Have also managed to get it on a separate line and centred on the page using some HTML code - which is totally new to me!!
You can start the count at any number you want - canīt quite remember mine but it was somewhere between 600-700 hits! - so have restarted again at 600.

Glen - you will be given some HTML code to add to the webpage (the same as we had to do with xcounters.)
Just make a note of the last picture that appears on your webpage - so that you can add the text after that picture - otherwise you get it half way down your home page (like you did last time!!!)
Once you have got it sorted I can give you the extra code to put in so as to get the web counter on a separate line and centred on the page (OH has just helped me with this one!!!)

Hi Elaine
I have the new counter up and running, currently attached to my last photograph of the homepage.

OK - the following looks very complicated but believe me it isnīt that difficult to do.
If you check my web page you will see that I have the web counter listed at the end of my photos.
So !! Go back into edit on your home page and amend the code that you have entered following the last photo.
The amendments to the HTML code that I have entered are shown below in bold red text. (When you enter it you just need to type it in normal font and black - have just shown it in red so that you can see what I entered.) The middle part of the HTML code (shown on this in blue) is what I have been given by www.statcounter.com.
<p><center><h3><font color=blue>Web counter : </font><!-- Start of StatCounter Code -->
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">
var sc_project=2228928;
var sc_invisible=0;
var sc_partition=20;
var sc_security="fe13474c";
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="http://www.statcounter.com/counter/counter.js"></script><noscript><a href="http://www.statcounter.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://c21.statcounter.com/counter.php?sc_project=2228928&java=0&security=fe13474c&invisible=0" alt="web page hit counter" border="0"></a> </noscript>
<!-- End of StatCounter Code --><h/3><center>
The items in red are the things I have added - just so you can see what they mean -
<p> = start new paragraph
<center> = centre on page
<h3> = larger text and bold
<font color=blue> = font color blue
The words .. Web Counter .. were then typed in - as I wanted these to appear on the home page
</font> = cancel previous font selection (that is the blue text)
and then at the end
<h/3> =cancel larger text and bold
<center> = cancel center
- just hang on a minute - need to check that what I have given you here is correct - back in a mo!
- yes just checked it out and that all looks OK. If you go back to your home page and then edit - go to the HTML code you entered and add the red bits as I have done, you should find that your web counter appears on a seperate line to your last photo.
Good luck!!!

Help, got to the bit where it says highlight and save gobble de gook - dont understand all the rest - save on notepad stuff??????:o
Using windows notepad, macintosh simpletext or any other simple text editor, open the file for the web page on which you want to install the counter (most likely, index.htm or index.html)
note : the file must be opened in 'text mode'. in simple text editors that's the default, in others you need to specify it.
Put the cursor just above the </body> tag as shown below (or anywhere else between the <body> and </body> tags if you know what you are doing)

Tis easy Heather. Follow the link Elaine gave, just register a name for the free account and click the little dot things to say what shade of pink you want...........
Then paste the code onto a photo on your homepage as you did with the old counter.

I tried that but the little counter thing appears as a box with a red x in the middle of it - doesnt come up like a counter.

No, its on there now, but quite small, may be thats cos I havent got my glasses on.
Whats all the stuff about checking records on who has visited? How do you do that?
Mind you mine will say, Glen, Glen, Glen, Glen, Elaine, Glen, Glen, Glen.

On the account you have just made (log in again if you need to) click on the little icons like the bar graph and spanner etc. On the left is a table titled "statistics". Click on the different headings to see which search engine or website link is giving you results etc.
Click on the "recent visitor map" for a world map and location of your visitors.
I have had hits from the UK, Germany and Spain today (last one looks like a dodgy character though) as well as Africa. I bet by tomorrow i get an african prince with Ģ20 million tied up in a bank somewhere sending me a message, LOL

Fascinating - Ive had 7 from London and 2 from Virginia since I put the counter on!:confused:

.... and now one from Spain (dodgy character indeed Glen!!!)
Heather - you have still left your old web counter there - go back into edit your home page and remove the HTLM code from the end of the picture Mary Ellen Gordon c1950
You current web counter, as ours was to start with, is just stuck on the end of the line of the last picture.
You can centre it and make it a bit more obvious by following my instructions in message 6 of this thread. Its very easy to do - print out my message so you have it in front of you (much easier than having to page back to read it!!) - edit your home page - find your photo where you have added the new code - and then add the red HTML code in where I have suggested - you donīt type it in red - I just did that to make it obvious which bits I added, and which bits came from the statcounter web site.

Hi Elaine at the moment FTM is playing silly ******s and keeps telling me Im not connected to internet or behind a firewall - so its not allowing me to view the homepage through the program. Ill try again later.
Many thanks. Ill get shot of the old box counter but I dont really need a more obvious counter on mine thanks - that little one is fine. BTW if you click on the counter thing it takes you to the webpage for checking the traffic.
Just done the removal of the old counter and see Ive had the iffy one from Valencia aswell Glen. What worries me is it shows someone was on there for an hour yesterday - now what were they doing on there that long? and still didnt contact me?
Oh, do you see they only take 100 logs - do you have to upgrade or can you delete old logs?

Oh, do you see they only take 100 logs - do you have to upgrade or can you delete old logs?
*!$>&*!$* - didnīt see that it only took 100 logs !!! .. and I went through about three different ones yesterday before I chose this one.
Will go and have another look at it and report back!!!
You all have vists from Belgium now!! I use www.sitemeter.com (http://www.sitemeter.com) on mine in case you need to change again ....

Have just been looking at the statcounter forum and have found this reply to a question about 100 logs maximum.
Reply: Just as clarification: each project gets all the hits tracked, but at any one time you can only see the details of the latest 100 hits in the log, since that is the log's capacity.
Now to me it appears that the web counter will continue to rise, but only the last 100 hits are logged - that is you will only be able to see the statistics for the previous 100 hits.
We will see!!

If it is that, I dont care, I mean, youd have to be a sad ****** to sit there looking at where your hits were coming from wouldnt you :) So the last 100 is fine, I just wondered if that was the ruse, wind us up and then say, oh now you have to pay.

Just noticed that i have had over 20 hits from the US as a result of google matches in 2 days. It even tells me what the keywords were in the search. In this case they all match ( "glen jones birth name") which seems kind of wierd.
They are from all over the east coast of the US. Either i'm wanted by some CSI/FBI dude or there is a college project going on somewhere.
Erm just checked the 2nd page, another 17 US hits from search engines, Washington, Florida, The Deep South, Kentucky, Dallas.
Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th, 78 hits from google searches, at least i know thae googole matches are working!!!

Go to your web page and click edit
Select the option as if you were going to upload a photo on to the web page - you will then be given two boxes, one for the photo title and the other for the photo description.
Paste the code into the description box.
Close web page
- open it again
.. and with any luck it should show up on your web page.

Hi Elaine, I have returned with my composure (almost) intact!
So, now I know where to go to paste. Do I have to actually put a picture on as well? I have tried pasting and closing and re-opening but no good. Also tried pasting and clicking the Add Photo Now button but then it says 'please provide a file'
I am calm, I am calm :o ;)

I wasn't really ready to add photos but it worked!!:D
Thanks Elaine, I would never have managed it without you guiding me to the right place lol.

Thanks Elaine have managed to get it centred but cant understand why photos are underneath when that was last pic with the code ;;;weird

Glad you managed to follow the coding instructions! They are not as difficult as they look! :)
I think you might find Babs that you have added it to the last photo in the listing when you go into edit mode - which may not be the same as the last photo on your page when you view your home page.
Why they are different - I do not know!
The thing to do is to view your home page and note down the last photo that you can see. Then go into edit mode and add the coding to that photo, regardless of where it appears in your listing in edit mode.
Thank you for this Elaine... have added one to my own webpage...

If you click on the counter on your home page, it takes you to the Statcounter home page where you can view the statistics.
Login to your account and click on your project name and you will see a list of statistic options in left hand column. Click on Recent Visitor map and you can see where your visitors are from - can be quite interesting. (Its sometimes slow to load so give it time).
You might see that you have had a visitor from Spain! :)
Many thanks again Elaine all sorted at the end and in centre ;;;great stuff ;;
mind how did you know what areas people were looking from couldnt fathom that out ;;
